RM of Gimli



Nestled along the western shoreline of Lake Winnipeg about 45 minutes north of Winnipeg, Manitoba this major tourist haven is at the heart of Icelandic heritage and culture. With the town of Gimli as the largest community in the Rural Municipality, this area was once part of New Iceland. Gimli has built a great reputation for hosting family vacations,national & international conferences and sporting events. The vast sandy beaches and beautiful surroundings makes this municipality a great destination to relax and enjoy your vacation.

Come to this magical place for fishing, sailing, motor boating, swimming, or just relaxing- there is something for everyone to choose, whether you come to visit or to live.Other communities in the RM include Sandy Hook, Arnes & Camp Morton Provincial Park.


Unique attractions in the area:

Gimli Art Club Inc.- Art Gallery displaying works of members, including the Sea Wall Gallery which has turned the concrete wall into an outdoor gallery at the harbour.
Gimli Film Festival - The Gimli Film Festival showcases over 100 entertaining documentaries, dramas and shorts from Manitoba, Canada, and Circumpolar nations.
Gimli Model Fest- Remote control Model Airplane Airshow held mid August with 3 days of airshow excitement & thrills.
Icelandic Festival of Manitoba - Celebration of Icelandic culture & heritage during this four (4) day festival every long weekend in August. Winner of ITA's 2007 Sustainable Tourism Award.
New Iceland Heritage Museum - This museum is found in three separate locations in Gimli. The new Waterfront Centre, along with the Lake Winnipeg Visitor Centre and Gimli Public School 1915 each has their own special treasures for you to explore.

Viking Statue - Just south of the New Iceland Heritage Museum you will find this 15ft. high Viking guarding the shoreline, erected to celebrate the Icelandic culture and lore.
Gimli Harbour – Located at the end of Centre Ave along the west shore of Lake Winnipeg. The home to one of Canada’s largest inland Commercial Fisheries, the sail boats from the Gimli Yacht Club, and power boats.


Recreation & Community places:

Gimli & District Recreation Center - a first class facilities used for sporting & entertainment events including a hockey arena, curling rink, full service fitness centre, canteen & banquet room with a lounge. Baseball, softball & soccer programs and facilities available.
Parks & Beaches - Community parks, green space, many sand beaches and marinas are located in the municipality.
Sandy Hook Golf & Country Club - This ITA member public 18 hole golf course is close to Lake Winnipeg between Hwy #8 & #9, access south off of Hwy # 519. Enjoy the challenge of this course or kick back in the club house at the end of the day.
