Narcisse Snake Dens makes it into Travel Mb.\'s \
Date: September / 01 / 2010
Bears, booze, and belugas trumpet Man. tourism -story on CBC news.
Snakes, whales and whisky are a few provincial attractions featured in videos on the Travel Manitoba travel website.

Tourists get a close-up glimpse of beluga whales near Churchill. (Travel Manitoba)
A new online campaign offers video clips from around the province, ranging from whale watching at Churchill and snake handling near Narcisse, to exploring Manitoba\'s 100,000 lakes and soaking up the sun on one of many beaches.

The Narcisse snake dens, located six kilometers north of Narcisse, are the winter home of tens of thousands of red-sided garter snakes.

The pits are the largest concentration of this particular type of snake in the world. In spring, the snakes come up to the pits where they engage in mating rituals then disperse into nearby marshes for the summer.

While natural attractions are among the main draws featured on UnexpectedTV.com, there is also whisky tasting at the Diageo plant in Gimli where Crown Royal is made, riding a water taxi in Winnipeg and touring the Manitoba legislative building to discover its Masonic mysteries.

Chad Olafson, the driving force behind Narrows West Lodge and Narrows West Development, has no shortage of experiences, including becoming friends with Sopranos star James Gandolfini.

"I met him when he can up here with his brother-in-law and first cousin for a hunting trip," said Olafson. "I knew him when he was a struggling actor. You know, I've thought for a long time if I get caught up, I'd write a book about the crazy things that have happened by me."

Until then, the 33-year-old, award-winning Interlake entrepreneur will be busy transforming the Narrows area, northwest of Vogar on Hwy. 68, into a West Interlake tourism destination by completing Narrows West Ranch Estates, a 60-lot cottage development; a 330-lot development where Gandolfini purchased a lot; a $127-million hotel; year-round water park complex; golf course; condominiums; business park and retail mail.
